Debuting in a 1938 comic book, Superman has since grown into one of the most widely recognizable and iconic figures in pop culture history. It wasn’t until 40 years later that America’s favorite hero would get his first big-screen treatment with Superman in 1978. Directed by Richard Donnerand starring Christopher Reevein the lead role, Superman was a smash hit at the box office and critically well-received, all but ensuring the character of Superman a future in Hollywood.
